It needs a new tranny.....How deep should my pockets be for this project? And, for those Benz drivers out there, is it worth the trouble? (Not this car, but one very much like it)

It’s probably worth the trouble. I don’t know as much about those as the W124s, though. I don’t think the trans is that big of a hassle, but I haven’t had to (re)do mine yet.

W126s are pretty solid

On the other hand, these cars aren’t too expensive, if the tranny needs an overhaul and you’re not doing it yourself, might be worth it to just hold out for a better example.

There’s a pretty clean looking ‘86 560 SEL for sale not super far from me in VT for $2750 or best.
I had an ‘89, lovely car to drive. I'd say it's built like a tank, but it would be more accurate to say that tanks are built like a W126.

According to the ad it needs
” NEW TRANNY, ALTERNATOR BELT AND LEAK IN POWER STEERING FIXED”
all caps are his, not mine. Opinions?

Sorry about the late reply, super hot here today in the PNW. Unless you are getting it for a steal (less than 1k) and you’re either looking for a project, or have something else to drive. The belt is not an issue, the power steering leak could go either way, but the transmission is likely going to carry with it a fatal bill.

It’s a project. I’ve got a Mazda and a Fiat 500 as my DD. The one I’m looking at is $600. I’m not looking to make it a DD, but rather to see if I can flip it for a little bit of profit. It only has 115k miles, which from my understanding, is pretty low for a Benz.

Since it sounds like you generally know what you’re doing, go for it. No electronics in the trans, just a complex valve body which can be figured out with some patience.

see my update... long story short, the seller was a huge liar
